In 2017, I suited up my bicycle to tour the USA coast to coast. I chose the TransAmerica Trail for this mad pursuit, a 4,200 mile path from Yorktown, Virginia to Astoria, Oregon (with a prelude in NY and PA). I saw a wide cut of the middle of the country and some of the most beautiful places within, all while blasting up and down hills fully loaded and tent camping at night. Some photos here are among my true favorites; there's some interesting stuff one can only witness from two wheels!

HarrisonFM Hits the Road
This Summer, I’m happy to announce that I’ll be embarking on a new adventure. Cycling cross country is my goal this year. It turns out that February’s bicycle trip turned out to be less a one off and more of a prologue! I decided only after doing that trip to take an aggressive gambit on a […]

HFM X-Country, Prologue: Port Jervis to Ithaca, NY
Prior to embarking on any grand adventure, it’s best to give your gear a breaking in. So, before I go cross country in May, I did a few days of cycling with my full kit through Northeast Pennsylvania and upstate New York. I had a great cause, to visit one of my Appalachian Trail friends, “Slim Rims” and […]

Initial Impressions from Trans America
I’m 3 days in on TransAmerica, writing on trail from the tiny, rustic community of Greenwood, Virginia on the periphery of the Shenandoah Valley. I took a break from TransAmerica as I compose this article to attend Damascus’ Trail Days festivity as an Appalachian Trail alumni. My friend Thorny from last year’s AT hike picked […]

Farewell Appalachia
Scavenger signing in from the crossroads of trails, Damascus, Virginia. It’s good to be back here so soon, but this time I’m not lingering as I beeline for the Kentucky border and out of my dear Appalachia. It’s been two Springs now of human powered travel across this state and the nostalgia’s been real this […]

Treading Lightly Through Eastern Kentucky
Riding from Damascus to Berea has been a bit of an odyssey. My sense of joviality surrounding my return to the Appalachian Trail took a deep shock as the TransAm navigated into Kentucky. The eastern part of this state is the most wretched place I’ve ever been. It’s eye opening that this exists in America. The steep, abrupt hills make […]

1000+ Into Illinois
Hello from Carbondale, Illinois, where the TransAm does a short stint on the way West before Missouri. I hit the thousand mile marker recently and survived the Kentucky gauntlet, though things really picked up for the better in the state’s Western half. The harsh hills have become bucolic, rolling farmland for this stretch. I’ve been […]

Through Missouri, Into Kansas
I’ve zoomed through Missouri and much of Kansas as I approach halfway through the USA. The ground’s flattened out and I’m racking up mileage, but each day still proves a trial and a blessing. A cascade of flat tires forced me to stop in at Hutchinson KS and I soon realized that a rest day […]

Mountains and Desert
I’ve been riding high in the mountains lately, checking in today from Rawlins, Wyoming at 6,834 ft. This is the land where all the cities list their elevation as you enter. I’m feeling gleeful being way up in the clouds after battling through the mental fatigue of Kansas’s endless farmland and the East’s relentless humidity. […]

Roaming Wyoming
I’ve now sauntered over the Montana border, through Yellowstone and am jotting my thoughts down in the friendly, small town of Twin Bridges. They offer free camping here for cyclists, so it was an easy choice for me to stay. I’ve been tapering my miles for the past week to savor these more exotic locales […]

Final Crossings
I’m through what may be the last of the desert on this journey as I’ve found refuge in the cozy confines of Baker City, Oregon. Yes, I’m now in the final state of TransAm! I could be finished in as soon as a week if I wanted to put the turbo on. I’m not really […]

To Astoria! TransAm Conclusion
As of July 31st, I finished the TransAmerica Trail, in the very Northwest corner of Oregon, Astoria. Oregon was a very diverse state ecologically, and one I navigated almost entirely solo. I found myself in a pretty zen spot as I wound my way through peak after peak until I finally ran out of mountains, […]

TransAm Epilogue: Pacific Wanderings
My bike trip around the USA is officially over as of the 20th. I finished in Salem, Oregon, just in time for the eclipse. My freewheeling route took me all around Western Washington before spiraling back into Oregon. I eagerly hit up Seattle and Portland as destinations and found this epilogue a worthy addition to […]

An Ambivalence For Traveling America By Bicycle
Back in August, I concluded three months of dedicated cycling across the USA. Navigating coast to coast this way is a powerful and freeing experience, but not one I’d readily endorse. There are challenges and safety issues that give me pause despite it being a positive time for me overall. The intent of this article […]
