In 2018, I set out on what may have been my most ambitious adventure thus far; six months of wandering the states, from coast to coast and back. Caveats? Plenty. Shoestring budget. No car, nor flights. Only ground transit, rideshares or my trusty bicycle. Lastly, there was no fixed itinerary as I made my way from NYC to LA and back.
What a free, explorative period! I made sure to try and spend up to a week in various locales to soak up as many disparate vibes I could find, and was contented with the results in my writing and photography. Boy, was I sad when this one ended!

On Becoming a Digital Nomad
It’s been a little over six months back in NYC after cycling across America, and the urge to hit the road has been realized once more. My vision for 2018 is to try my hand as a digital nomad, or one who works remotely on the move. I’ll be moving from city to city in […]

North Carolina, and a New Journey's Commencement
I’m happy to say that my third wandering of the USA is now well underway! Much of my first month involved the state of North Carolina from sea to mountains, and this log will stay focused on my activities in that state. My trip began with a Chinatown bus ride down to Wilmington, North Carolina […]

Deeper into the South
Part II of my travelogue resumes after an uneventful drive to Atlanta from the Smokies. On arriving at Forrest’s apartment in Buckhead, we immediately got ready for evening worship at his church. I’ll confess that I was dreading this possibility when I signed on to visit Forrest and stay with him. My personal theology is […]

Texas Bicycle Diaries
Part III of HarrisonFM Wandering resumes on disembarking Amtrak’s Sunset Limited train in San Antonio, TX. I was left with a mild crisis of sorts on getting into San Antonio. It was midnight, and I had nowhere to stay. The city, despite being the country’s 7th largest via population, has no hosteling, and few folks […]

Southwest Stepping
Chapter IV of the travelogue resumes in the town of Taos, New Mexico at the end of a week of bike touring through West Texas, at the address of a man named Stephen given to me by a third party on a mountain pass. The door was open at Stephen’s, and he turned out to […]

Bay to 'Braska
We resume in the small town of La Honda, California, 50 miles from San Francisco after getting dropped off there around midnight from a Craigslist rideshare. After a night surrounded by dark, towering Redwoods, I opted for a sandwich from the La Honda general store before embarking for San Francisco. I remember feeling a bit […]

An August of Midwestern Moseying
Chapter 6 of HFM Wandering resumes late on a humid Omaha morning as I prepared to ride my bicycle 400 miles to Minneapolis. There’s always a feeling in me when embarking on a new bike tour that’s hard to describe, a sense of dread and anticipation as I commit myself to days of purgatorial riding. […]

An East Coast Ending
HFM Wandering returns for a final chapter in the bleak hours of the morning after Labor Day in Fort Wayne, Indiana before embarking for Detroit on bicycle. Insomnia is something that’s been a recurring affliction for me in recent years. Usually what happens to me is that I sleep for two hours and then am […]

Summing Up Six Months of American Wandering
I spent six months traveling across America this year, going from city to city in what I dubbed a car-less road trip. I started from and returned to New York City, in a clockwise loop. This is my third excursion in three years, after previous expeditions hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2016 and then cycling […]
