I hiked the Appalachian Trail northbound in 2016 and kicked off a lifetime of adventure with a bang. This hiking trail stretches approximately 2,200 miles along the Eastern US from Georgia to Maine and is one of the premier backpacking experiences in North America. Over 5 months, I would crest peaks, soak in mud, and meet all kinds of wild types.

Road to the Appalachian Trail
Tomorrow, I leave for the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200 mile hiking journey through the Appalachian mountains. The meandering route starts in Georgia and culminates in Maine, at Mount Katahdin. Much of this land I haven’t been to before and overall, it’s a grand adventure to be had for those seeking a natural endurance challenge to both body and mind. I’m pretty thrilled […]

A Rebirth as Scavenger: Georgia Synopsis
I’m sitting at Top of Georgia hostel today taking what is known as a “zero” in hiker language. It’s a day off, in this instance, strategically taken to rest up & avoid overnighting outdoors in thunderstorm conditions. This is my eighth day on the trail and the day I accepted my trail name, Scavenger. To […]

One Month on the AT: Trail Angels, Ragamuffins, Agelgids
Today concludes my first month on the AT. I am writing from the home of a stranger that took me in for a couple nights in Erwin, Tennessee. Though I experience Nature in a wonderful state every day I hike, it is the people that I meet that have made this journey into something transcendant. […]

One Third In: Green Tunnels, Mindfulness, Comorbidities
From Erwin, I have hiked another 400 miles, and have eclipsed the 1/3rd way mark of the Appalachian Trail. My travels over the month of May have me halfway through Virginia, which is dubious for having the furthest mileage of any state along the trail. Some of my favorites landscapes recently have been the “Lord […]

Pennsylvania Dispatched: A Tale of an Unbound Metabolism
Scavenger checking in again! This time I’m at Delaware Water Gap, the town that marks Pennsylvania’s border with New Jersey along the AT. I’ve zoomed through Pennsylvania over a dozen long days with a merry band by my side. My pals are the aforementioned “Forrest” and “Slim Rims”. Through grit, cooperation, and serendipity, we pushed […]

On Flying Through New England
My journey has taken me through a myriad of states recently as I traversed New England on my way to Maine. The New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts sections now are all complete. Vermont is next to conclude as I rest in the ambience of the matè loving denizens of The Yellow Deli in Rutland. […]

The Majesty of the Whites
Hello from Andover, Maine, in what’s my penultimate log entry on the entire trail! I’m now in the final state, but it’s not like I’ll be coasting along to the finish line. This state’s remaining ~250 miles include some of the most rural and difficult sections of trail. After a revitalizing trip through New Hampshire’s […]

The Final Stretch To Mt. Katahdin
It took me five months to the day (March 24th – August 24th), but I’m now finished with all 2189.1 miles of the Appalachian Trail and back home in NYC! Woohoo! Next on the docket is navigating my reintegration to human society from being a wilderness warrior. First, let me regale y’all with a recounting of my last days […]
